Ukrainian Punk Folk Circus Rock
When Dakhabrakha made their Dakota debut last August we had no idea what to expect. As turmoil had recently gone aflame once again in their native Ukraine we knew there would be a heavy weight of emotional impact from the evening. Such a passionate performance unfurled from the Dakota stage mustered together their courage and elaborate passion and took over the room with their music. Running the gamut through joy, sorrow and even aggression, Dakhabraka took their instruments and the audience to new heights.
We can’t wait to see what’s up their sleeves this time!
DakhaBrakha is a world music quartet from Kiev, Ukraine. Their music is equal parts elemental sound and soul and Ukranian “ethnic chaos,” creating a new world sound that is unexpected and fresh.
Taking their name from the old Ukrainian language (the literal translation is “give/take”), DakhaBrakha was created at the Kiev Center of Contemporary Art by theatre director Vladislav Troitskyi. The theater figures prominently in their show, from their costumes to their staging.
While their basis is in Ukrainian folk music, the band has added rhythms of the surrounding world into their music. Dakhabrakha illuminate traditional Ukrainian melodies with their updated arrangements, keeping the music alive for new generations.
Accompanied by Indian, Arabic, African, Russian and Australian traditional instrumentation, the quartet’s astonishingly powerful and uncompromising vocal range creates a trans-national sound.
At the crossroads of Ukrainian folklore and theater their musical spectrum is intimate then riotous, plumbing the depths of contemporary roots and rhythms, inspiring “cultural and artistic liberation.”
